The 21-year-old has made 25 appearances for the Bundesliga side this term and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has identified him as the man to add some extra bite to his midfield after enduring so many injury problems over the course of the campaign.

Xhaka, who is known amongst friends and teammates as ‘young Einstein’ due to his interest in science, joined the German side from FC Basel, where he made a name for himself after breaking through their successful youth academy that has also recently produced the likes of Mohamed Salah and Fabian Schar.

Reds boss Rodgers has had the 23 caps Swiss international scouted secretly on numerous occasion this term and has determined that he has enough about him to slot straight into the side and be ready to help the Anfield giants with a renewed challenge for the Premier League for 2014/15.

Having been born in Albania, he elected to play for Switzerland after claiming that the Albanian Football Association continued to ignore him. The Swiss had placed several phone calls with the hope of converting him, to which he accepted, but turned down the chance to play for the Olympic team last summer in order to get settled in to life in Germany following his transfer.

He got off to a slow start last season, making just a handful of appearances as coach Lucien Favre wanted to bring him though slowly as to not overwhelm him, something which Brendan Rodgers is said to admire him for.

Rodgers has struggled at times this season to put out a strong midfield, with injuries, suspensions and dips in form all taking their toll. He is keen to ensure that that doesn’t happen again and is specifically targeting more versatile players in order to keep competition sharp. Xhaka can play anywhere through the middle as primarily a defensive midfielder, but is also comfortable moving forward too.
