Former Reds boss Rafa Benitez, who is now in charge of Napoli, brought the Slovakian to Anfield from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008 and is now seeking a reunion with him in Italy.

Napoli were consistently linked with a move for the 29-year-old last year after he slipped down Brendan Rodgers’ pecking order during the second half of the season, though a concrete offer failed to materialise.

However, he has since recovered his place in the side this term and has become a key figure in their march to the top of the table as they search for their first league title since 1990.

And his representative Karol Csonto believes that Napoli, who have placed Skrtel at the top of their defensive wish-list, will fail in any pursuit of his client at the end of the season.

He told Calciomercato: “There is no chance of Skrtel going to Napoli. His relationship with Rafa Benitez? There is nothing to add about this. What I can say is that Martin Skrtel will not go to Napoli. Skrtel will remain at Liverpool.”
