Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is said to be ready to pass the custodial baton on from veteran Petr Cech to young pretender Thibaut Courtois next season, according to the Metro.

Reports in Spain, where Courtois is currently spending his third consecutive season on loan, Mourinho is believed to be willing to put Courtois ahead of Cech as he knows that the Belgian will not want to play second fiddle to anybody at Stamford Bridge.

A source close to Atletico Madrid is said to have received word that the 21-year-old will not be at the Vicente Calderon next season, and Antonio Sanz, previously a press officer at the Spanish club and a friend of Blues striker Fernando Torres, believes this will be the case.

Mourinho is eager to keep a hold of the highly-rated shot stopper as he has been outed as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world, but the manager knows he will need to go back on his insistence of not playing him if he is to have any chance of convincing him to stay in west London.

Cech’s form has dipped this season, leaving question marks over his own future as the Blues’ undisputed first choice.
