The right back has rejected an improved contract offer from the Eastlands club and will depart in search of first team football, with City valuing the title-winner at around £7m.
The 25-year-old is City’s longest standing player, having joined the club when he was just 14, but a series of niggling injuries have restricted him to just 10 starts under Manuel Pellegrini this season.
City have been aware that Richards is likely to depart and the club have already begun drawing up contingency plans, with Bacary Sagna of Arsenal a target.
Richards, who has 13 caps for his country, became England’s youngest ever defender when he appeared aged 18 and he also won five caps for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games.
The defender’s departure is set to be part of an English exodus at the Etihad, with Jack Rodwell and Joleon Lescott also set to leave and James Milner’s future uncertain.
