Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich’s hands even though they took the lead in the second half from a Patrice Evra strike. Bayern equalised within 22 seconds from a Mario Mandzukic header and two more goals from Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben killed the tie.
And Fletcher, who started from the beginning against the German giants, believes that the side showed their true qualities against significant opposition and that the tie was closer than the scoreline suggested.
“People were saying we’re miles off [Bayern’s level] but I don’t think we are. It’s small margins in big games and you’ve seen that tonight”, the Scot told the club’s official site.
The 30-year-old stated that the defending Premier League champions showed enough quality and determination over the two ties to prove their detractors wrong and believes that they can compete at the highest level with the top teams in Europe.
“They’re the defending champions but we’ve got a lot of quality in our squad and we showed at times over the two legs that we can play at this level and compete.”
However, United look set to miss out on the competition next season and will be the first time since the 1995/96 season that they haven’t took part.
