The 22-year-old has long been linked with a host of top clubs, including Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Monaco, but United have won the race for his signature after finalising terms on a five-year contract, although the deal will not be rubber stamped until the transfer window reopens.
The Portuguese international, who is set to feature in this summer’s World Cup, will be the first of a host of big summer arrivals at Old Trafford, as manager David Moyes looks to revamp his struggling squad after a dismal debut season at the helm.
United have strong links to Carvalho’s agent Jorge Mendes, which may have helped in facilitating the deal, while Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson have all swapped Sporting for Old Trafford in recent seasons, with varying degrees of success.
