Everton are plotting a summer bid for Manchester United reject Tom Cleverley, according to the Daily Star.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who has featured in 21 Premier League games this season, has received widespread criticism for the level of his performances in recent months.

Cleverley believes that he has been made a scapegoat for United’s awful campaign, which has seen the Red Devils miss out on qualification for the Champions League for the first time in 19 years.

However, that view is not shared by the majority at Old Trafford and the club are poised to offload and replace him at the end of the season, with Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas top of their transfer wish-list, according to The Sun.

The news of Cleverley’s availability is said to have pricked the ears of Toffees boss Roberto Martinez, who worked with the 13-time England international during his loan spell at Wigan Athletic in the 2011-12 campaign.

The Daily Mirror understands that Martinez views Cleverley as the ideal candidate to eventually replace 32-year-old Leon Osman, whose current contract expires in June 2015.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Cleverley, who has scored one goal and made zero assists in the league this season.
