The £30m rated German international is seen as an ideal replacement for Nemanja Vidic, with the Serbian veteran on his way to Inter Milan, and will be just one of a host of new arrivals the Old Trafford side will look to secure once the transfer window re-opens.
Hummels signed for Borussia Dortmund in 2009, after a successful loan spell, and after winning two Bundesliga titles the former Bayern Munich man may feel the time is right to leave the Westfalenstadion with Jurgen Klopp’s side now a country mile behind their domestic rivals from the Allianz Arena.
Indeed it was van Gaal who sold Hummels to Dortmund during his spell in charge of the Bavarian club and it’s a mistake he apparently regrets and intends to put right once he takes the reigns at Man United.
Van Gaal may also want to find replacements for both Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, who’s contracts also expire this summer.
