While the Blues look to pay £35m to sign the 25 year old La Liga man they will then have to foot £40m to cover the Brazilian born Spanish international’s salary demands.

Costa will pen a five year deal that will earn him £150k a week, tripling his current Vicente Calderon wages, and a fair bit will cover agent fees.

Such is Jose Mourinho’s desire to bring in a prolific forward that he is likely to offload Fernando Torres and Demba Ba to help may way for his new addition whilst veteran Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o is unlikely to be offered a new deal when his current contract expires this summer.

Costa’s 36th goal of the season came at Stamford Bridge earlier this week and helped his side to the Champions League final.

Diego Simeone will struggle to replace effectively replace Costa, who has formed a strong partnership with David Villa this term, and will hope that the powerful forward can help Atletico Madrid to either glory either in the Champions League or to a La Liga crown before he leaves for west London.
