Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will move to strengthen his Anfield squad this summer and has earmarked a move for two impressive young talents.

Football Direct News claims that the Northern Irishman will look to mount an audacious bid for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who could well be seen by Rodgers as a long term replacement for veteran skipper Steven Gerrard.

The 20 year old England international has had an outstanding campaign and has been rewarded for his efforts with a spot in Roy Hodgson’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

Though Everton are well versed in selling their top talents in order to make ends meet it’s likely that any move by chairman Bill Kenwright to sell to their Merseyside rivals would be met with vociferous complaints by the club’s fan-base.

Rodgers will also look to bring in additional attacking options and has set his sights on Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku, no doubt impressed by the youngster’s efforts on loan at West Brom and Everton over the past two campaigns.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has displayed a willingness to sell to direct rivals, having accepted Man United’s advances for Juan Mata in January, and as such a good offer from Liverpool could well be considered.

One does wonder quite how Rodgers would look to use Lukaku as well as Luis Suarez & Daniel Sturridge in the same starting eleven as none of the three would be all that happy to be left warming the bench.
