CaughtOffside Awards: Chelsea And Liverpool Wonderkids Battle For Best Young Player Of The Season Honour

Posted by

Some hugely exciting young players have emerged this season, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton stars nominated. Find out who CaughtOffside writers voted for here.

Adam Davies:
Raheem Sterling, thanks to greater consistency than Everton’s Ross Barkley. Previously labelled a skilful winger whose main attribute was his pace, Sterling made a huge step up this season, and is a remarkable talent for just 19 years of age.

Few coaches would have trusted the Liverpool teenager at the tip of a midfield diamond, but he has shown immense versatility and excellent decision making to flourish in the role when Brendan Rodgers granted him the opportunity.

Sterling’s movement is a real strength too, and he is always available for a pass. He could really shine for England this summer.

Tom Seymour:
Raheem Sterling represents Brendan Rodgers’ best attributes as a manager – which certainly isn’t the Northern Irishman’s transfer dealings, Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge excluded.

This is because Rodgers is a brilliant coach who has given the winger not only the confidence to succeed, but also the awareness to make the best of his opportunities, as shown by nine goals and six assists in 2013/14.

Richard Morgan:
The Liverpool flyer enjoyed a sensational campaign at Anfield, with goals, assists, pace and trickery all regularly on display. It earned the 19-year-old Sterling a deserved call-up by England for this summer’s World Cup.

Robert Summerscales:
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was openly critical of his striking options this season.

Meanwhile, Blues frontman Romelu Lukaku was scoring goals for fun on loan at Everton.

The big Belgian, who turned 21 earlier this week, netted 15 times and provided six assists in 31 Premier League appearances.

Lukaku is surely poised to make a big impact at Stamford Bridge next term.

WINNER: Raheem Sterling
