The experienced Dutch coach has agreed a three-year deal with the Red Devils and will start work at Old Trafford after the conclusion to this summer’s Fifa World Cup finals in Brazil, where the 62-year-old will be leading the Oranje.

“In Louis van Gaal, we have secured the services of one of the outstanding managers in the game today,” said United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in an announcement on the club’s website.

“He has achieved many things in his career to date and Old Trafford provides him with a fitting stage on which to write new chapters in the Manchester United story.”

Van Gaal takes over from the former United boss David Moyes after the Scot was given his marching orders in April after the top-flight giants had failed to seal a top-four finish in the Premier League, meaning no Uefa Champions League football in the north west next season for for the first time since 1995.

And the Dutchman will be assisted in his role by United legend Ryan Giggs, who himself had taken charge of the team for the final four league games of the previous campaign.
