Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani could be heading to England this summer as Financial Fair Play rulings have put the French club under pressure to offload one of their big names, CaughtOffside understands.

The Ligue 1 champions were recently penalised by Uefa for failing to adhere to FFP regulations, and look set to find themselves spending beyond their means again this summer with a £40m move for Chelsea defender David Luiz expected to go through later this month.

With PSG keen to continue bringing high-profile players in before next season, they now look under pressure to sell before they can buy, and it has emerged that last summer’s expensive purchase Cavani will be the first in line to make way.

The 27-year-old arrived at the Parc des Princes for a fee in the region of £55m just last summer after establishing himself as one of the best centre-forwards in Europe during his time with Serie A side Napoli, and his reputation could still mean he commands a hefty transfer fee this year, despite a slightly disappointing season in France.

The Uruguayan international managed 25 goals in all competitions, but often found himself played out of position to accommodate star player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and it has been reported several times that the player himself is looking for a move elsewhere this summer.

Premier League sides have shown an interest in Cavani in the past, with Chelsea and Manchester City among the leading contenders to sign him last year. Chelsea’s interest now looks to have cooled as they close in on the £32m signing of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, but City remain keen and could face competition from local rivals United for the striker’s signature this summer.

United are under pressure to bring in some big names ahead of next season after a highly disappointing campaign in 2013/14 that saw them finish in seventh place and without any silverware under David Moyes, and new manager Louis van Gaal could help attract some more established players to Old Trafford.

Bayern Munich stars Toni Kroos and Arjen Robben have been mentioned as possible targets for the Red Devils boss, but Cavani’s potential availability will likely see them come up with an offer in the coming months, though it remains to be seen how much PSG will expect to bring in from his sale.

City could also be in the market for a new signing upfront as star player Sergio Aguero continues to be eyed up by La Liga pair Real Madrid and Barcelona, while the likes of Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic failed to impress on a consistent basis this season.

The Etihad Stadium outfit are also under pressure to meet FFP regulations, but with Aguero’s potential sale likely to bring in around £56m, they should find it easier to afford the signing of Cavani.

It is also believed that Serie A champions Juventus are monitoring Cavani’s situation.
