Old Trafford side chase AS Roma star.
Check in to Spain vs Netherlands
Man United are reportedly closing in on a big money deal to sign AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman according to Dutch source ELF.
The Dutch international is currently sidelined with a long term knee injury that has ruled him out of Louis van Gaal’s 2014 World Cup squad but is seemingly no barrier to the incoming Old Trafford boss’s interest.
As Sport Witness points out, a move for Strootman is something of a risk given his long term injury but apparently it’s a risk van Gaal is ready to take.
Man United are in urgent need of fresh central midfield options and Strootman offers two types of midfielder in one.
The rangy 24 year old has the physical presence to break down opposition advances but is also a dab hand at making things happen in the final third. Strootman has scored 20 times over the course of the past three season and despite his stint on the sidelines the former PSV Eindhoven man still finished the season as one of the club’s leading assist makers.
Strootman would be an infinitely more effective option than the likes of Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick though one wonders if Stadio Olimpico boss Rudi Garcia would be open to selling a player he only brought in less than a year ago.
