Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will go head-to-head in the race to sign Dutch World Cup starlet Memphis Depay, who has been dubbed the “new Cristiano Ronaldo”.
Reports in the German media have claimed that both Premier League clubs have registered their interest in the 20-year-old winger, who currently plays for PSV Eindhoven. The youngster, who has already scored 22 goals for his club’s first-team, recently netted the winning goal in his country’s 3-2 World Cup win over Australia.
He struck 14 of his Eindhoven goals last season, and was one of the few bright sparks for PSV as they finished a disappointing fourth in the Eredivisie table.
United will consider themselves favourites to make a deal happen, with incoming manager Louis van Gaal currently in charge of the Dutch national team. Depay would be a useful addition at Old Trafford, with United having found themselves bereft of in-form wide players for much of last season. He would arguably be an ideal replacement for Nani, who seems certain to leave the club this summer.
However, new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino could yet steal a march on his new club’s rivals by tabling a 21 million euro offer. The player’s agent, Kees Ploegsma, has suggested that the Dutch club are unlikely to settle for anything less.
