New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reportedly shown an interest in signing legendary Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez, according to reports in the Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo.

United were widely criticised for their lack of creativity in midfield last season, and van Gaal could yet make a move for the vastly experienced playmaker, who is yet to discover whether he is in the plans of new Barca’ manager Luis Enrique.

The Old Trafford club, who are thought to be on the verge of completing a deal for 24-year-old midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, could view Xavi as the perfect mentor for their new man.

The 34-year-old, who has spent his entire career at the Camp Nou and been capped well over 100 times by his country, has previously been linked with Manchester City, as well as a number of clubs in the MLS.

A move does remain unlikely, with Xavi likely to be keen on finishing his career with Barca’, but he could yet be tempted by a move to the Theatre of Dreams, if it becomes a realistic possibility.

After their difficult season under David Moyes, in which they finished seventh in the race for the Premier League title, United are intent on undergoing a huge overhaul of their current squad. As well as being deep in negotiations for Herrera, they have also submitted fresh bids for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen and Southampton full-back Luke Shaw, while they have been linked with the likes of Arjen Robben and Sami Khedira.
