Arjen Robben remains a transfer target for Manchester United, despite the imminent arrival of another big-money signing, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

TalkSport have reported  that incoming United manager Louis van Gaal is ‘desperate’ to add the 30-year-old Dutch winger to his squad, despite the sizable fee the player’s current club, Bayern Munich, are certain to demand.

Robben has been one of the star players so far at this summer’s World Cup, scoring three goals as the Netherlands progressed with ease from Group B, winning all three of their matches. And now van Gaal, who is currently overseeing the Dutch campaign ahead of his move to Old Trafford, is hoping to bring his star man with him to Manchester.

The attacking midfielder, who can also play on either wing or as a forward, has scored 89 goals in 166 appearances for the German champions, following spells for Real Madrid and Chelsea.

It could be a busy week for United on the transfer front. On top of the Herrera deal, they are also believed to have submitted a bid for Arsenal’s Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen, and made a fresh move for Southampton full-back Luke Shaw. The Manchester-side will be keen to add to their defensive options, after seeing both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand depart the club.
