Spurs aiming to hijack Liverpool deal.Tottenham Hotspur look set to step up their interest in Southampton defender and Liverpool target Dejan Lovren this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Croatian centre-back was a highly impressive performer for the Saints in his first season in the Premier League in 2013/14, and is now attracting plenty of interest in this year’s transfer window.
One of many Southampton players currently being linked with an exit from the St Mary’s Stadium, Lovren had looked likely to join his former team-mate Rickie Lambert in moving to Anfield, though he has also emerged as a target for his recently-departed manager Mauricio Pochettino, now in charge at White Hart Lane.
With Spurs looking suspect defensively for much of this season, a new defensive signing has been a priority for the club, and Lovren looks a player who could come in and improve their backline.
The 24-year-old could command a fee of around £15m, but Liverpool’s participation in next season’s Champions League could still see them as favourites to land him ahead of Tottenham if they do manage to meet Southampton’s asking price for the player.
The Reds should have plenty of money to spend this summer, with star striker Luis Suarez being increasingly linked with a big-money move away from the club.
