The Reds had made an initial approach of £20m for the Croatian stopper, but the Saints didn’t believe it was in line with their valuation of the player and they rejected the offer.

Speaking about the failed bid, the 25-year-old said: “Liverpool sent the offer and the club haven’t informed me.

“That wasn’t right. I found out about the bid from other people which disappointed me and I realised I’ve got no business staying at Southampton.

“Liverpool sent a £20m offer and they paid £9m for me, so they would’ve earned more than twice the amount.”

However, sources close to the south coast club are suggesting that Southampton will let Lovren leave for £25m .

New Saints boss Ronald Koeman has already seen his side decimated by transfers as Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana have already joined the Reds while Luke Shaw has made the move to Manchester United. The Dutchman is now prepared to dig his heels in and play hardball for Lovren as he attempts to keep him and midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin for the upcoming season.
