Manchester United Turn Their Attention To £15m Left-Back Despite Having Signed Luke Shaw For £27m

The Red Devils are interested in Rodriguez as a replacement for Evra.

Manchester United are weighing up a £15m move for Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez as Patrice Evra discusses a move to Juventus, reports the Times.

Evra only signed a one-year extension with the Red Devils in 2014, but is thought to be keen on a move to Turin and United are resigned to losing the 33-year-old.

Juve have offered around £1.5m for the France international along with a two-year contract, although the English giants are holding out for £2m.

Having signed Luke Shaw from Southampton in a £27m deal this summer the requirement for a new left-back isn’t urgent, although the recent departures of both Fabio and Alexander Buttner means backup for the 18-year-old will be needed.

That is why new manager Louis van Gaal has turned to another youngster in the shape of Rodriguez, with the Switzerland international greatly impressing in the Bundesliga last term.

The 21-year-old combined defensive responsibilities with attacking flair and his strong crossing ability saw the starlet provide 10 assists in 2013/14 and score seven goals.

As promising a talent as Rodriguez is, the loss of Evra will come as a blow to United as van Gaal was hoping that the veteran would help ease Shaw’s transition into life at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman is also a popular figure in the dressing room and with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic having also left this summer, the defender’s experience would have been invaluable during the adjustment to the new regime.
