Eccentric Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis has explained his bizarre reasoning behind the club’s pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, the Daily Telegraph reports.
The Italian businessman is known for being outspoken and opinionated, and his latest offering is up there with his best lines, as he admits he likes the look of Fellaini because of his hairstyle, and its resemblance to a lion’s mane.
The Belgian international has not been a big success at Old Trafford following his £27.5m move from Everton last summer, and United look likely to let him leave this summer, though the two clubs are yet to agree on a fee for the player.
Fellaini was, however, regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League during his time at Goodison Park, and Napoli appear to have made him one of their top targets this summer as they look to strengthen in the middle of the park.
De Laurentis feels the 26-year-old could form a good partnership with Gokhan Inler at Napoli, and he reminisced about the unveiling of the Swiss international, who was made to wear a lion’s mask when he was presented to the media.
“They [Fellaini and Inler] would make a nice pair,” he said. “Together they have a hairstyle that looks like a lion’s mane and three years ago I presented Inler with the mask of a lion!”
