Vermaelen had already agreed a deal in principle to join Louis van Gaal at United but Arsenal are reluctant to lose such a versatile player – even if he is not now among their first-choice centre-backs – especially to one of their main Premier League rivals.
Arsenal would prefer to send him overseas, and should the player agree to the deal, and a fee be reached, then he will likely be on his way to the Nou Camp.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen to keep hold of him and use him as a back-up option, though the player himself is said to be desperate to move on in search of regular first team football after falling behind in the pecking order to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
Vermaelen has been keen on a move to Manchester United and it now remains to be seen whether he would be willing to join Barcelona. United are also considering an improved bid in excess of £10m, but so far the offer from the Spaniards is the only concrete offer on the table.
