Liverpool central midfielder Lucas Leiva is keen to be reunited with former manager Rafael Benitez at Napoli, report the Daily Star, with the Serie A side still looking to secure a new option in central midfield.

Lucas has reportedly told Benitez that he wants to move to the San Paolo – and is now waiting for the Serie A side to make their move.

The defensive midfielder largely fell out of favour at Anfield last season, with manager Brendan Rodgers preferring the energetic duo of Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson in the centre, although he is likely to see Lucas as solid and experienced cover for a squad set to be competing in continental competition next season.

Napoli have been on the search for a central midfielder all summer, with Premier League stars including Manchester United’s Marouanne Fellaini and Tottenham Hotspur’s Sandro also being linked, but it looks as though Lucas could now be the target of Benitez’s attention.

Benitez may be hamstrung in the transfer market until Napoli know whether they will receive the financial windfall that comes with qualifying for the Champions League group stages, however, with a tough draw meaning that they face a difficult task against La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao.
