The Spaniard was one of the world’s hottest properties when he joined from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2007 and he lived up to the billing immediately. Where Liverpool’s domestic cup campaigns suffered, their European form took flight and he wracked up six goals in 11 games on the continent. However, it was the Premier League that had the biggest reason to be fearful, as his first season saw him bag 24 goals in just 33 appearances, which he of course topped up in the remaining four games of the following campaign.
