Former Chelsea and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o looks set to arrive at Everton, report the Mail, with the experienced forward set to take a medical at Goodison Park ahead of signing a two-year deal with the club, having lowered his exorbitant wage demands.
Liverpool had reportedly also been in talks with Eto’o as a back-up option should their deal for Mario Balotelli fall through, but with the Italian’s move to Anfield now having been confirmed, the coast has been cleared for Everton to seal a deal for Eto’o.
One of the most clinical centre forward of his generation, Eto’o spent the prime years of his career with Barcelona and Inter Milan, before moving on to wealthy Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala and Chelsea.
Despite a solid goalscoring record at Stamford Bridge last season, Eto’o was released at the end of the season in acrimonious circumstances following something of a falling out with manager Jose Mourinho, related to jibes made by the Portuguese boss about the player’s age.
Everton, meanwhile, are on the hunt for an extra striking option to provide competition for record signing Romelu Lukaku, who joined for a £28m fee, also from Chelsea, this summer – and Eto’o now seems to be that man, after he turned down the opportunity to join Ajax.
