A deal to bring the England international to the Emirates has been ongoing all day, though most believed that it would be in the shape of a £6m season long loan deal.
However, reports are now suggesting that the two clubs are working on a deal to sell him on a permanent deal for an extra £10m.
United are in the process of completing a deal to sign Radamel Falcao from Monaco on a season long loan, but the writing could be on the wall for Welbeck as that deal will have an option to buy clause installed next summer.
Welbeck has also been eager to play in a more central role, which he most likely will not get the chance to do at United, so a permanent switch to Arsenal could help see him realise his ambitions.
