Louis van Gaal’s side will register a €31m (£24m) bid for the Dutch midfielder, who is still some way from making a recovery from a long term knee injury.

The Old Trafford side are very keen on the former PSV Eindhoven man and will look to see Strootman prove his fitness once he returns to action and are already drawing up a contract offer for the box to box performer.

Van Gaal is known to be a big admirer of the Stadio Olimpico star and Strootman will be offered a €125k (£100k) a week deal to help persuade him to leave the Italian capital.

Strootman played a key role in Holland’s qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup finals but missed the finals through injury.

Man United are ready to hand van Gaal additional funds in January despite forking out £150m+ to bring in Angel Di Maria, Falcao, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera this summer.
