The striker had come close to leaving Old Trafford last summer because of his disagreement with the Scot but now he appears to have put the episode behind him and is full of praise for the 72 year old.

He told MUTV: “He was vitally important.

“I’m grateful to him for having the faith to bring me in from Everton.

“I think he’s an incredible person and manager, the way you see his desire for the game. He certainly helped me a lot and helped us all.”

Rooney moved to United from Everton in 2004. Looking back on his move from Goodison Park, the England captain said: “It was a great feeling. Sir Alex is the best manager there’s been and for him to recognise my talent and want me to join this club was a great honour for me.”

Although the striker now appears to have a good relationship with his former mentor, their were times in his career where his relationship with Ferguson was strained.

Twice the England international nearly left the Theatre of Dreams due to disagreements with the former United boss. Once in 2010 when he was heavily linked with a move to bitter rivals Manchester City and last summer when Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea were interested in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

It took Ferguson’s successor, David Moyes to persuade Rooney to remain with the Red Devils.
