The Red Devils spent nearly £150 million on new players during the summer transfer window, bringing in big money buys like Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera.

Despite this huge outlay, United still need a lot more investment before they can truly compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Louis van Gaal’s squad is particularly weak in defence and this was shown in United’s 5-3 defeat against Leicester City on Sunday, with the 20 time league champions conceding four goals in 21 minutes.

With more investment needed, the Dutchman is set to meet with Woodward to discuss even more spending in January, with the former Bayern Munich manager wanting £50 million to sign new targets including Roma’s Kevin Strootman and a defender.

Woodward is reluctant to spend heavily again and worries that such a big outlay would affect the club’s accounts.

This means that van Gaal may need to sell some players before he can buy new ones.

The most vulnerable United player at the moment appears to be Rafael, who has not developed into the quality right back many thought he would become. The Brazilian was also at fault for the penalty that brought Leicester back into the game in United’s latest defeat.
