Rodgers signed Balotelli as a replacement for Luis Suarez, who moved to Barcelona in a £75 million move mid-way through the summer.
Unfortunately, the Italian has only scored one goal so far this season and Lawrenson feels that the former Manchester City front man simply isn’t going to score the same amount of goals as last season’s player of the year.
”I already believe Rodgers is going to have to make a move for a fast, pacey striker during the January transfer window, especially if [Daniel] Sturridge is going to miss chunks of the season through injury,” the Match of the Day pundit said.
”Mario Balotelli had a decent game but he is a big lump up front. He offers a different kind of threat.
”He [Balotelli] doesn’t have pace and he’s never going to score 20 goals a season.”
Lawrenson also made it clear that Daniel Sturridge is the Reds main striker and stressed the importance of getting the England international back to full fitness asoon as possible.
He explained: ”Suarez and Sturridge scored bundles and bundles last season, and the latter needs to be fit sooner rather than later. He’s the one player the Reds simply cannot afford to lose for any great length of time.”
