The young defender made his debut for the club last weekend against West Ham and impressed as he helped keep the Hammers at bay to hang onto a slender 2-1 lead.
Defensive trio Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all reamin sidelined for the clash with the Toffees and the Northern Irishman will step into the breach once again.
“It’s no different,” said Van Gaal of his defensive crisis. “I believe we still have three central defenders injujred so he [McNair] shall play.
“He’s the only player that can play in that right central defender position so I have chosen last week that was more difficult than now because he has played very good I think.
“For a player like him it’s very difficult to maintain that level. That is his biggest challenge.”
