In his press conference this afternoon, Louis Van Gaal has amazingly backed his club’s plans to play midweek friendlies during the season.

“I agree with that (idea)… we have spoken last week with each other and Ed Woodward, so I fully agree.”

United currently have just one midweek game scheduled between now and the end of the calendar year thanks to their non-participation in Europe and their early exit from the Capital One Cup.

The record 20-time English title winners have forecast a 10 per cent drop in revenue in 2014-15 after they failed to qualify for the Champions League under David Moyes.

But they are now targeting some games in the Middle East that will not only allow them to escape the English winter for a few days, but help them exploit the signings of the likes of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria by parading them in territories where they are big commercially.

Many United fans will be disappointed with the news considering the dreadful start United have made to the season. They might have hoped that Van Gaal would use the time with his players to maximum effect, much as Brendan Rodgers did last year without the pressures of European football.
