Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has made the baffling claim that influential captain Steven Gerrard wasn’t dropped for the midweek Champions League clash with Real Madrid, but was in fact injured, the Daily Mirror reports.

Before the clash it had been suggested that Rodgers would rest the veteran midfielder in order to keep him fresh for upcoming fixtures and to take him out of the firing line following some sub-standard recent performances.

At his weekly press conference on Thursday afternoon, he was asked about Gerrard’s exclusion in Madrid, but Rodgers revealed he had a scan on his hamstring before departing for the Spanish capital.

Gerrard was fit enough to take a place on the bench, though, alongside fellow first team regulars Raheem Sterling, Dejan Lovren, Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson and Mario Balotelli.

Rodgers has yet to hint as to whether Gerrard will be back in the starting line up for the weekend match with Chelsea, though this game will hold some particular significance for him as it was the fixture last year that saw Liverpool’s title hopes disappear.
