Mario Balotelli returned to the side after being one of many players rested during the midweek Champions League loss against Real Madrid. Waddle believes Fabio Borini should have started for the Merseyside club however, claiming that the Italian would have given an injection of energy to the side that was missing at Anfield.
“Fabio Borini, why did he not start? He may lack a bit of craft but he brings you that energy,” he said.
He continued by saying that Rodgers doesn’t yet know what his preferred starting XI is, and needs to settle on one soon.
“It’s not a criticism, but because of injuries I don’t think Brendan Rodgers knows his best team. Adam Lallana, on the bench today, he must be thinking: ‘Why did I come here?'”
Liverpool have yet to really get started this season, and are perhaps lucky to still be where they are in the table. At the end of this weekend they could find themselves dropping to 11th.
Already 15 points behind league leaders Chelsea they are making things increasingly difficult for themselves with their recent poor performances.
They are also in danger of being knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages, despite being expected to qualify easily when the groups were first drawn.
