FC Basel star Fabian Schar is the latest centre-back to come onto Manchester United’s radar, according to the Mirror.

Manager Louis van Gaal is keen to sign defensive recruitment in the January transfer window and Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund captains Ron Vlaar and Mats Hummels were believed to be the preferred options.

However, Vlaar is approaching 30-years-old and is perhaps lacking the top flight experience required, whilst Hummels is being valued at £47m by his club.

Van Gaal is also understood to be keen on another Netherlands international in Bruno Martins Indi, although the 22-year-old only joined FC Porto from Feyenoord over the summer.

Schar meanwhile would represent a more cost effective option and the Switzerland international is still young at 22-years-old and has vital Champions League experience

The defender is also a regular for the Swiss national side with eight caps and four goals for the country to date.

Van Gaal has made a new centre-back a priority for the Red Devils in the New Year as the current crop at Old Trafford continue to fail to impress the Dutchman.

Phil Jones has shown some good form, but is constantly injured, whilst neither Jonny Evans or Chris Smalling have been deemed good enough by the 63-year-old.
