Don’t Listen To Bitter Arsenal And Manchester United Fans… The Capital One Cup Is A Great Competition

The League Cup is currently called the Capital One Cup for sponsorship reasons. However, to its critics it is the ‘Micky Mouse Cup’.

The League Cup is unfairly derided. Why?

It can’t be because of the quality of the teams involved – all 92 Football League clubs. It’s just like the FA Cup, minus the non-League sides. And there hasn’t been a non-League winner in the FA Cup since 1901!

Just like the FA Cup, the final is played in front of a packed Wembley Stadium, with the winner taking a place in the Europa League.

Haters often say that the League Cup is devalued because the ‘big clubs’ field weakened teams and don’t take the tournament seriously. However, many Premier League managers rotate their squads in the FA Cup as well.

Furthermore, the elite clubs who suffered early exits this season’s League Cup hardly threw the towel in.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger named eight senior internationals in his starting XI in round three, when the Gunners lost 2-1 at home to Southampton.

Meanwhile, Manchester City – last season’s champions – fielded 13 senior internationals in their fourth-round defeat to Newcastle United.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who is new to English football, probably just underestimated League One side MK Dons, who smashed the Reds Devils 4-0. He won’t make that mistake again!

Both Arsenal and Man United are desperate for silverware. The Gunners have won just one trophy in nine years, while the Red Devils are still yet to win one since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

The truth is, both clubs would crow like crazy if their side won the League Cup, but, because they are now out, they cling onto the fashionable excuse that it doesn’t matter. It’s a myth.

The League Cup is very important. Anyway, the ‘big teams’ must take it fairly seriously. After all, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have all lifted the trophy in the last decade.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Newcastle – whichever one of you lifts the famous trophy on March 1, enjoy it, even boast about it, just make sure you don’t pretend you don’t care next season if you fail to replicate your success.

Long live the League Cup!
