The versatile midfielder and defender has been on the sidelines for the last six weeks after injuring his knee in Holland’s 6-0 win over Latvia in November. This has caused him to miss most of the Red Devils’ winning run that has led them to third in the Premier League.
The Dutchman is still unlikely to feature again this year, but at the very least this shows that manager Louis van Gaal may have less injuries to deal with in the near future. At one point up to 12 first team squad members were ruled out, but in recent weeks they have been regaining their fitness. Chris Smalling is apparently a “maybe” to face Newcastle on Boxing day according to the 63-year-old.
