The Gunners are in dire need of defensive reinforcements in January, and Wenger views the Dutch centre-back as the perfect player to provide the required depth.

Celtic still claim that they are unwilling to let the 23-year-old go in January, but an offer of £10m is believed to be enough to tempt them.

Arsenal will of course have to contend with interest from the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, and Manchester United as well, but their French manager remains confident he can get his man.

Van Dijk has made no secret that he would like a move to the Premier League, and a club offering regular Champions League football is a must for the young star.

“Arsenal is an amazing club, of course. It’s a big club with a great history as well,” said van Dijk.

“I have ambitions, of course, like every player.”

Arsene Wenger’s side may be struggling domestically this season, but the prospects of playing in the last 16 among Europe’s elite could prove a very tempting offer.
