Arsenal transfer news
Arsenal have been linked with both players this January, and may have been hoping to land Hummels as their priority target to fix their defence after some poor performances this season.
However, the German international would appear to favour a move to Old Trafford over the Emirates Stadium, leading to the Gunners now focusing on improving their defensive midfield options with the signing of Carvalho.
The Portuguese starlet has been in superb form in recent times, attracting plenty of interest from big clubs all around Europe, though Arsenal look in most need of quality in that part of the pitch at the moment.
Still, it will be a blow for Arsene Wenger to miss out on Hummels as well, with defence also clearly a position that needs improving this winter.
