Van Gaal had indicated in the run up to the game that one of his big five attacking players would have to miss out on the starting line-up for the game but, whilst Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Angel di Maria all started the game, Colombian international Falcao did not even make the game and left Old Trafford before kick-off.

United are yet to decide whether to make the striker’s loan move from AS Monaco a permanent one at the end of the season, with Falcao having been dogged by both form and fitness issues since his surprise deadline day move from the Ligue 1 club to Old Trafford.

Van Gaal was asked about the situation of Falcao following the game, but the Dutchman did not give United fans a straight answer following the defeat and was cryptic about his reasons for not selecting the forward:

“Falcao isn’t injured he’s just not selected in the squad.”
