Liverpool transfer news
The 25-year-old England international, who has been in superb form in the Premier League for the last couple of seasons, is currently facing an uncertain future as he stalls on signing a new contract.
Delph would be free to walk away from Villa for nothing at the end of the season, with Liverpoool believed to be big admirers of the player as Brendan Rodgers seeks reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Still, Lambert feels Delph is not necessarily looking to quit the club and is just biding his time over agreeing a contract that is right for him.
Although the Midlands club look in a difficult situation in their bid to keep one of their best players, their manager is not giving up on a deal and thinks it would be a major statement for the team if they could manage to fight off interest from elsewhere.
“Can we keep him? Yes,” said the Scot.
“It would be a major boost if we can get him to stay. It would send out a great message. Him turning around and staying would be a massive statement.
“We’re still talking to Fabian. Hopefully we can get something done. It would be great for us if we could do it.”
