The Red Devils look in need of strengthening at the back this season after some unconvincing displays from their current defenders, with Pique the latest in a long line of big-name centre-backs linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Pique left United for Barcelona in 2008 after struggling to make an impression in his time with the club, whom he actually first joined after leaving the Catalan giants as a teenager.

Now regarded as one of the best players in the world in his position with a whole host of major honours to his name for club and country, including four La Liga titles, two Champions League titles, the World Cup and the European Championships, Pique would certainly fit the bill for Louis van Gaal’s side’s needs.

It remains to be seen if Barcelona would consider the sale of a key player for such a low price, especially given the club’s recent ban from making any signings.
