The Red Devils have looked shaky at the back this season after being heavily linked to the defender before the campaign began. However, the stellar form of goalkeeper David De Gea has tended to make up for the mistakes of those in front of him so far.

Long serving centre-backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left United in the summer, but no specialist in the position has been brought in since their departure. Players such as Michael Carrick and Daley Blind have had to deputise in the position so far, despite not being natural defenders.

Gullit said, “The only thing for me that is a surprise is Van Gaal didn’t buy any good central defenders – that had to be his priority. He was crazy about Hummels and wanted to buy him. So I would have bought Man Utd some good defenders because that was the weakest link.

“For me, that they did not was a surprise. Nevertheless, he gets results. The more results he gets, the more confidence they get and the better they will play.”
