The French international has been in superb form this season, showing himself to be one of the best defensive midfield players in the Premier League after a series of fine displays to aid the Saints in their fight for a European place.

Still, Schneiderlin’s great form could now see him leave the St Mary’s Stadium at the end of this season, with Koeman quoted in the Daily Star as saying it is hard for a club to keep its best players when they perform so well, hinting that other Southampton stars could be in the sights of bigger teams as well.

The Dutchman feels that ultimately the decision will be the player’s, saying this when asked about the 25-year-old’s future: “It will be hard when there is real interest in the player. It is up to the player what he likes to do.

“It is very hard but normally if we have the season like we have so far there will be interest in the players of Southampton.

“If he gets a big offer from a big team, there is always interest for the player and I understand that.

“That is normal, we know our level and that is a compliment for the players and the club.”
