Manchester United van Gaal: Boss says Red Devils lacked fighting spirit in damaging defeat

The Daily Express claims the Holland international is in the sights of fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils hoping to tempt him back to the North-West three years after he left rivals Man City.

A turbulent season at the San Siro could push him towards the exit door when the summer transfer window opens, but he has taken to social media site Twitter to hit back at rumours of a rapidly-deteriorating relationship with Inzaghi.

In a series of messages the 30-year-old seemed to admit that there was a discussion with the manager, but claimed they could talk “as adults” before urging people to move on from the issue:

De Jong, who played under van Gaal for the Dutch national side, left the blue side of Manchester in 2012 after helping City to win their first ever Premier League title.

An unresolved contract dispute paved the way for his switch to Milan, and history could repeat itself because he has a matter of weeks left on his present deal, meaning he could join United for free.

Inzaghi finds himself under pressure with his side sitting 10th in the Serie A table, having won only four of their last 12 matches.
