Liverpool target £25m-rated Edin Dzeko as Mario Balotelli replacement

Liverpool have entered the transfer chase for Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, as Brendan Rodgers looks set to offload flops Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini at the end of the season.

Despite Divock Origi to return from his Lille loan, and Danny Ings expected to make the switch to Anfield when his contract with Burnley expires next month, the Reds are still chasing a top-class forward in the summer transfer window.

Rodgers, according to the Daily Mail, is interested in Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, however with Tim Sherwood not keen on selling the Belgian, the Northern Irish manager has singled out City’s Dzeko as a more realistic target.

The Bosnian has three years remaining on his current deal at the Etihad, and as such will reportedly command a fee of around £25m.

Chelsea, however, could scupper a Reds move, as the champions are also considering a summer move for the 29-year-old.

Dzeko has made just 11 Premier League appearances this season, and could be welcome to the idea of leaving Manchester in search of regular first-team football when the campaign comes to an end.

Liverpool have also been tracking the availability of Dzeko’s team-mate Stevan Jovetic, and the Sky Blues value the Montenegrin at £20m.

The Merseyside outfit have been woeful in front of goal this term – with their out-and-out strikers scoring just eight league goals between them.
