Arsene Wenger has revealed his intentions to spend big in the summer transfer market, and wants to add a number of world-class stars across his Arsenal squad ahead of next season.

Wenger has predictably led the Gunners to a top four finish this term, and the Frenchman intends to continue with his big spending after the successful recent high-profile signings of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

In an interview with beIN SPORTS ahead of the final Premier League weekend, the Arsenal manager was asked if he will be handed a large transfer kitty in the summer market – and whether he’ll spend it.

Q: “Are you ready to spend big this summer?

A: “We are ready to spend the money for players who strengthen our team.

“There is a difference in that and just spending money.

“If I ask you who has spent the most money this last season and if I give you last season, and the season before, it is never the teams who have won the championship. If for example we got a player like Coquelin, if we had bought Coquelin for £40m in December, because he started to play in December, everybody would say, ‘What a buy! What a great player!’, but the fact that he comes out from our own club and plays, everybody says you still have to buy a player in his position.

“You have to be careful sometimes not to rate the players only by the amount of money they cost but just look at their performances.

“We are in a position where we just want a player with an exceptional quality in any area that can strengthen us. The depth of squad is important and any world class player in any position can help us achieve what we want to achieve.”

A plethora of top talent across Europe is being linked to a switch to the Emirates in the coming months, as the North London outfit are still some way off competing for the Premier League title and the Champions League and want to bolster their squad.

Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gundogan, Petr Cech and Arturo Vidal are among the most notable names on the Gunners’ transfer grapevine.

Wenger is famously strict in his transfer policy at the Emirates, but in recent seasons has spent £77.4m on Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez – hinting that he is now ready to change his system to see the Gunners compete with the world’s best.
