The 30 year old’s Villa Park contract is set to expire and no new deal has been agreed between the Dutch international and his employers, leaving the door open to a possible exit.

Louis van Gaal knows Vlaar well from his time in charge of the Dutch national team and could see a move for Vlaar as a solid cost-effective option to boost his back-line.

Southampton, Sunderland and Newcastle United are all also keen on Vlaar, who moved to Aston Villa in 2012, becoming the club’s captain soon after.

Man United struggled for consistency at the back last season, often being bailed out by in-form keeper David De Gea, and Vlaar’s no-nonsense style could be an ideal fit for the Old Trafford outfit.
