Anfield side chase tough tackler.

Liverpool have placed Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder William Carvalho at the top of their January shopping list according to Calciomercato via the Daily Express.

The 23-year-old Portuguese international is seen as a replacement for Brazilian Lucas Leiva who is expected to leave Anfield, with Besiktas known to be keen on the experienced battler.

£20m rated Carvalho has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League for the best part of 18 months and is a player of real quality who helped his Sporting Lisbon side to secure a Champions League berth for this term, following a third place Primeira Liga finish.

William Carvalho was part of the Portuguese national team squad at the 2014 World Cup finals and could offer Brendan Rodgers a strong option in the centre of the park.

Thus far this term Rodgers has had to chop and change in the midfield due to injuries suffered by Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen and a move to Merseyside may tempt Carvalho.
