Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night to temporarily move top of La Liga ahead of Barcelona’s encounter with Real Betis.
After a frustrating 80 minutes, the visitors finally made their pressure pay off with Angel Correa breaking the deadlock, only for Antoine Griezmann to produce this classy finish to secure all three points.
Atleti enjoyed the majority of the possession even though their rivals did threaten at times, but they also produced the better chances in the first half with Yannick Carrasco going close on two occasions.
However, the left winger couldn’t find the back of the net as the frustration started to grow for Diego Simeone, while Fernando Torres wasn’t able to open the scoring either as his wait for a goal continued having been denied with this effort.
Nevertheless, it would have mattered little in the bigger picture as the Spanish giants secured the victory with a late double salvo from Correa and Griezmann, with the latter netting his ninth goal of the season as he continues to establish himself as the star man in this Atleti side.
With Real Madrid winning earlier in the evening and with Barcelona in action on Wednesday night, it remains to be seen who ends 2015 top of the pile and with a morale boost heading into the new year, but Simeone will certainly be delighted with the effort from his players.
Despite appearing as though they were heading for a disappointing draw, the visitors left it late again to strike and picked up what could turn out to be a crucial win.
